What problems can arise from working in the medical billing and coding field?
for example with nursing a problem would be shortages or long hours. But what would be examples for medical coding and billing?

unemployment is the biggie.
ask those schools you’ve been listening to what their placement rate is and what average wage their graduates are making 6 months after they graduate. then ask them if they’ve included in the averages the proportion who aren’t working at all [as zeroes] and what proportion that was again.

after that, the problem is you’ll have no future growth path — what else would you be good for??
Another problem you overlooked is making a mistake. Coding incorrectly can result in wrong amount billed and insurance not paying. Also, getting a job in a market where even doctors are cutting back due to lack of people coming to the doctor due to no insurance. People expect to pay for home and auto upkeep and repairs, but seem to mistakenly thinking the care of their health and body should be someone else’s responsibility. Go figure!
I agree with the postee that mentioned about unemployment. A lot of billing companies are outsourcing to Asia/India leaving jobs more scarce. With medical coding, the health care facility can get a pretty hefty fine if the wrong code is entered. Coders generally need a couple of years experience doing coding tasks, certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited program to possibly even get a job.
If still interested in schooling, please opt for the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.
That’s not a very good field at all!! Nursing is so much better. There is always a need for nurses.. ALWAYS!! And you don’t have to work long hours– it just depends where you choose to work. Doctor offices, health dept, insurance company’s, etc.. Yes, usually at the hospital they have long shifts BUT you get paid quite well for those shifts. You can also be a on-call nurse or registry which means you fill in as needed.
Nursing is an excellent field to go into!!! You can even go into sales afterward or later on in life and sell medical stuff!!!!!
